Theodore Woerthwein

Mr. Woerthwein specializes in trying cases in both state and federal court. His fellow Illinois attorneys voted Mr. Woerthwein an Illinois “Super Lawyer” in the areas of civil and criminal law. He represents people in a broad range of lawsuits.

Mr. Woerthwein has brought and won cases involving serious personal injury and medical malpractice, violations of civil rights, employment discrimination, and infringements of constitutional rights. We were fortunate to be able to assist the family of Rhoni Reuter by obtaining justice from Marni Yang who was convicted in March 2011 of killing Reuter, the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle. Yang is serving two life sentences in prison for the 2007 murder. A Cook County jury awarded $40,000,000.00 to the family of as the result of a civil case against Marni Yang, the woman found guilty of Reuter’s murder. The award was the second-largest verdict in 2011.

Mr. Woerthwein also represents plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of commercial cases. He represents many mid-sized companies, including the individuals who own and operate them. He represents shareholders and individual corporate directors when sued by the government or others.

Mr. Woerthwein filed a class action suit against the City of Chicago. Chicago failed to properly install and maintain curb ramps that people with limited mobility use when crossing streets—a violation of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The City entered into a consent order, which forced the City to install and repair ramps whenever it resurfaces or repairs streets. Chicago was also required to spend $10,000,000.00 a year for five years to bring the City’s curb ramps into compliance with federal law.
